Family Friendly Budget Accommodation On The Beach

THE GREEN TEAM

In April 2020 at the very beginning of the Covid Crisis Madagascar had just firmly closed it’s borders to all foreigners and the hotel in Anakao was completely empty so me and Ed decided to make the most of it and teach my little sister in law Bella and Josh’s Nanny Andrea to surf on the little beachie in front of the hotel. On arrival there was a bunch of little grommie chicks surfing on old pieces of broken pirogue and the girls quickly became friendly with them so after the surf we invited them back to the lodge and told them that we had plenty of spare boards they could borrow so they all ended up becoming best of friends and basically surfing together every other day. After several months of intensive training at the SuperBank we ended up taking them all out to Jelly Babies for their first outer reef session and not long after we started introducing them to competition with little Mary (pictured on day one) taking out the first ever Anakao Ampela Pro then backing it up a few months later with a win in the regional titles then 18 months later she went on to win the first ever Madagascar National Surfing Championships! Since then the girls have all progressed enormously and we’ve even taken them surfing at more notorious waves such as Flameballs, Pousse Pousse, Outers, Inners and Secrets to hone in their skills and as of recently the best up and coming Juniors in Anakao have also joined « The Green Team » and they’re currently surfing harder than ever before in preparation for the next National Surfing Titles and am pretty sure that we have a couple of future champions in our midst!

Surf Lessons with The Green Team

Over the last year or so not only have we been intensively coaching TheGreenTeam but we've also been teaching them how to give surf lessons so now the girls are busy looking after all our female, teenage, and grommet clients that want to learn to surf. Lessons with The Green Team are 50 000ar per person including board rental with all proceeds going directly to the girls! NB: This price does not include outer reef transfers which must be added if necessary. For advanced lessons or professional coaching please contact us directly.

Nosy Vé Half Day Tour

Nosy Vé sits around 2.5km off the coast and directly opposite the hotel. The Island is a natural reserve and bird sanctuary and is surrounded by pristine white sand beaches and a crystal clear turquoise coloured lagoon giving even Bora Bora a run for it's money for it's sheer beauty. During the Island Hopper Tour you'll have time to explore the island and check out the native birds that nest there, swim out to one of the tiny sand atolls that lay just off the beach or go snorkelling in the coral caves on the reef surrounding the island. If you only do one excursion during your stay in Anakao Nosy Vé is definitely the Editor's Pick!

Nosy Satrana Excursion

Nosy Satrana is located around 10km to the south of Anakao and is surrounded by one of the most beautiful lagoons you will ever see. The island itself is "Fady" or sacred to the locals and also hosts a natural rock pool ideal for swimming. Just a little further to the south there is also an enormous mangrove with variety of birds including eagles and pink flamingos with the local makis also nestling in the trees particularly early in the mornings or at sunset in the evenings.

Saint Augustin & Sarodrano Day Tour

Saint Augustin otherwise known as The Bay of Pirates is located around 20km to the north of Anakao and is the breeding grounds for Pink Flamingos with the Mangroves also hosting a large variety of other birds and makis. After visiting the village you'll be heading right off the beaten track to an authentic Vezo fishing village located on a paradisiac little sand peninsula called Sarodrano. From here you can enjoy a delicious seafood buffet lunch at L'Auberge de Pecheur or visit La Grotte, a freshwater cave ideal for swimming. At the end of the day it's the sunset cruise back to Anakao with a pocket full of unforgettable memories!

Jelly Babies Surf Tour

Probably one of the most user friendly waves in the world and suitable for surfers of all levels Jelly Babies is without a doubt the most regularly surfed wave in the region. This tour includes board rental and return transfers to the break at just 45 000ar per person!

Miscellaneous Outer Reef Surf Transfers

The hotel is equipped with two fibreglass pirogues with 15hp outboard motors on the back to transfer clients out to the breaks. In general clients staying in Anakao surf the local breaks of Jelly Babies &, Flameballs but we can also organise transfers to more distant breaks such as Kamikazes, Maggots, Inners, Outers, TT's, Mussolinis and even to the Secret Spots. Please contact us directly for more detailed information!

Kite Surfing

Although we are by no means specialists in the field we've had enough of our surfer clients come through that kite surf to know that the southwesterly trade winds that blow in most afternoons are ideal for kiting in the lagoon and out to the inner reef breaks or even to the outer reef breaks such as Flameballs. We don't have kite surfing equipment to rent but can put you in contact with a local operator that does. Please contact us directly for further info.

Kick back and enjoy!

To be completely honest there's not a thousand and one things to do in Anakao but that is exactly the beauty of the place it's tailor made for just laying back and taking it easy. From two-dollar massages on the beach to enjoying the sunset apero with your loved ones Anakao really is the place to take a load off your shoulders and just chill right out!

The Gash Pack Swell Chase With Mada Surf Tours

The Gash Pack is mixed group surf tour with its basecamp at Mada Surf Ranch in Anakao, the surfing hub of the region. The tour in itself is essentially a swell chase targeting the best waves on offer in the region each day. As the tour visits four different villages it also doubles up as a bit of a discovery trip taking you to off the beaten track venues and surfing a multitude of differing breaks for all levels of surfer. The  50km stretch of coastline between Sarodrano to the north and Secrets to the south lays host to more than 20 breaks which are accessible by boat only. At least 12 of these breaks are world class on their day. A mobile surf tour or swell chase is the best of optimising potential surfing time in the region. The waves are quite fickle and local knowledge as well as a good boat are essential in scoring the best waves on offer each day.
